Hello, children below 5 are not allowed in Gurudongmar and you should not attempt that with your younger son. In fact it is not advisable to go there with children below 8 years. You might get snow there in May but not always. Your itinerary is okay but your place of stay (Lebong) is not quite suitable for such hectic local tours.  It's quite far away from Darjeeling main town and the Mall (Chowrasta). There are shared jeeps as well as private taxis that operate between Darjeeling lower town (chowk bazaar stand) and Lebong market.

You are unlikely to get shared taxis for Lachen & Lachung trip. You can't do much after returning to Gangtok from Lachung... takes good 6 hours. If you start very early, you can get to few nearby tourist sites in the afternoon like Tashi view point, Ganesh Tok, Bakthang waterfall, Institute of Tibetology etc.

Hi Raj Sir,

Madhu (January 2017)

Normally 3-point tour operators or taxi drivers won't take you to Old Ghum Monastery unless you pay extra. Another Ghum Monastery (actually known as Samten Choling Monastery) is also located at Ghum and on the main road. This is where most will take you. So decide on which one you want to see. Both are described in details in my site.

I would suggest not to venture to Tsomgo and Baba Mandir with your 3 year old daughter. Instead take the 10-point tour.

Raj (darjeeling-tourism.com) January 2017

Dear Raj Sir,
First of all I would like to tell you that i have not seen any travel website with such great details about any place and that too put in such a simple way with no complexities. Site navigations are also superb.

Now sir, i am planning a trip to Gangtok and Darjeeling next month with my wife and 2 year old son and i have made my itenary solely based on infirmation from this website. It is as mention below:

12 Feb - reach Bagdogra at 3 pm, private taxi to gangtok. Night stay at hotel.
13 Feb- local sightseeing mixed tour:
Bakthang waterfall, Tashi view point, Hanuman tok, Ganesh tok, Flower exhibition centre

14 Feb - tour to Tsomgo lake
if possible then banjhakhari or saramsa garden also

15 Feb - To Darjeeling in after noon around 2 pm by taxi. Night stay at hotel.

16 Feb - Darjeeling local sight seeing:
Rock garden, Gangamaya Garden, Japanese temple/peace pagoda, Happy valley tea estate

17 feb-  10 am -Tiger hill and senchel lake

18 Feb- 11 am - Toy train to Batasiya/ ghoom

19 Feb- 9 am - return to Njp by taxi.

I have tried to keep the schedule quite relaxed because i think if we keep travelling all the time then we are not able to enjoy the actual beauty of the place.

Please share your valuable views/comments and inputs on my itenary. Also one of the main attractions of this tour for us is to see snow. I think visit to Tsomgo lake will do the job. Please guide us regarding where to find snow easily. Lastly sir, does the itinerary suit my 2 year old son?
Your valuable guidance shall be highly appreciated.

Maneesh Srivastava (January 2017)

Hello, your itinerary is relaxed and quite good for your purpose. You may like to note these points:

1) Although altitude of Tsomgo lake is 12,000+ ft, altitude sickness or breathing issues up to the lake are unusual. While the army discourages taking children below 5-year to such high altitude places in north Sikkim, many tourists still do it at their own risk. Moreover, the route may also be closed due to heavy snow around that time. So work out a plan-B for that day. If you can still make it to Tsomgo, whether you can visit Banjhakri fall etc on the same day in the 2nd half would depend on how well you manage your time, but it is likely to become quite hectic. I suggest instead of combining it with Tsomgo & waterfall, better make Ranka Monastery & Banjhakri as your plan-B, if not plan-A.

2) Re-think about early morning sunrise at Tiger Hill in Feb with your 2-year old kid. It can be freezing cold around that time early in the morning. If you decide to drop Tiger Hill, you can then take the Toy train ride one way up to Ghum, take a taxi once you get off at Ghum, visit Senchal lake (which is nearby) and return to the hotel. You will save a full day on your itinerary. If your hotel is near the Mall, you can see great sunrise also from the View Point on Mall Road East.

Take a toy train (52587) from GHUM to Darjeeling (Start at 8.35 AM and reach Darjeeling at 9.05 AM). Mixed Point Tour starting at 10 AM covering. Will I be able to cover all the below points in a day? Please note that I haven't included Zoo as the plan is to cover it in Gangtok.

Will we be able to cover both east and west kalimpong by 3 PM if we start  early. Would like to start to NJP around 4 PM so that we can reach by 7 PM. Yet to book the train. Thinking of KANCHANKANYA EX which departs at 8.30 PM.

Hi, you need to make a few corrections. After 3-point tour terminating at Batasia, waiting at Batasia for that long for the toy train early in the morning with an infant should be properly thought through. Also check the timings of toy train before you go. The mixed point tour along with Rock Garden on the same day can make it quite hectic and you should then start the tour early. Rangeet Valley tea estate is no longer quite accessible to public.

You should stay in Pelling for 2 nights and not start for Gangtok on the same day when you take local sightseeing tour. Children below 5 years are not allowed in Nathula... you should not try that out. Neither can you plan a Yumthang/zero point as a day trip from Gangtok. You can not also cover east & west Kalimpong on a day and get back to NJP in time.

So overall your plan has plenty of flaws.... need to read my articles in more details :)

Good plans. Day3 can be a bit tight, you may not have enough time for Rock Garden/Ganga Maya if ropeway takes time due to long queue. Day-5 can be quite hectic, start early.

Raj (darjeeling-tourism.com) February 2017

Hello Mr. Raj,

I am planning a Sikkim-Darjeeling trip in May. I am planning the following, kindly let me know if this seems feasible:

5th May: Arrive at Bagdogra around 12 pm, travel to Gangtok via car.
6th May: Local sightseeing in Gangtok.
7th May: Tsomgo lake, Baba mandir, Nathula pass (if possible) etc.
8th May: Other sightseeing in and around Gangtok
9th May: Travel to Lachung, night halt.
10th May: Yumthang valley, Katao, zero point, night halt at Lachung
11th May: Gurudongmar lake and back
12th May: Checkout from Lachung and travel to Darjeeling via Mirik;
13th May and 14th May: Sightseeing in and around Darjeeling
15th May: half-day sightseeing, check out and travel to NJP for train.

Would the above plan work? Would be very grateful if you could validate. Would love to have your suggestions too. Thanks for your time. Regards,

Sabari Chattaraj (February 2017)

Hi, several problems in your itinerary....

1) You should not attempt Gurudongmar from Lachung because you will need 2 hours to reach Lachen from Lachung and then move towards Gurudongmar. Tourists staying at Lachen start by 3:30am for Gurudongmar because of changing weather conditions at the lake. It won't be possible for you to maintain that timing from Lachung unless you travel in mid night which is not advisable at all. And it also doesn't make sense to return all the way to Lachung while you could have directly returned to Gangtok saving 2hrs of extra travel time. So if you must go to Gurudongmar from Lachung, check into a hotel at Lachen on the previous day and return to Gangtok next day after visiting Gurudongmar.

2) From Lachen or Lachung you should not attempt to directly transfer to Darjeeling... will require about 11 hours drive which is not advisable. So stay overnight at Gangtok and proceed to Darjeeling next morning.

3) Mirik does not come on the route from Gangtok to Darjeeling. You can however visit Mirik while returning from Darjeeling to NJP.

Hi Raj,

I am very pleased to visit your site. Site is amazing, useful information are every where, for almost everything. DAY - 1: Reaching NJP to Darjeeling via Mirik. Night stay at Darjeeling.

DAY - 2: - Wake up early Morning to watch Sun rise over Mt.Kanchenjunga from Tiger hill - Ghoom Monastery - Back to Hotel - After Freshen up - Lunch - Toy Train Ride -  Local Site-seeing - Back to Hotel.

DAY - 3: Checkout - Way to Gangtok - Check in - Freshen up - Lunch - Local Site enjoying - Back to Hotel.

DAY - 4: Full day tour @ Tsomgo Lake - Baba Mandir - Nathula Pass - Yumthang.
DAY - 5: Enjoying the beauty of Gangtok and local area and Rest.
DAY - 6: Checkout - way to NJP and back to home.

We need your special view about the weather(Darjeeling & Sikkim). Is it suitable for our 1yr old baby son? and about the budget hotels in Darjeeling & Gangtok.

Regards,

Swapnadeep (March 2017)

Once you take a joy ride in the second half, you wont have time for sightseeing although you can walk around Mall (chowrasta), do some shopping etc. You can not cover Yumthang with Nathula on the same day. Yumthang requires separate 2 days. You should not visit Nathula with your 1 year old. I have discussed many nice budget hotels in my site.

Your itinerary is fine. If you want to save some time while returning then visit Gangtok first, otherwise keep your plan. Roads are now better.

Saurav, your tour plan is fine. You can add a few more sightseeing if you want. On day-2, in the second half you can visit Japanese Temple & Peace Pagoda, as well as Happy Valley Tea Estate (both near by). Actually a 7-point tour would include these but you need to start after breakfast (having returned from Tiger Hill). On day-4 if you take the toy train ride in the morning, in the second half you can Visit the Rock Garden & Ganga Maya Park.

Hi, you can add Hanuman Tok with Rumtek etc (it's not usual route and you need to work out the fare with taxi driver). You can add Jorpokhri with Mirik day trip. Chota Mangwa attractions are already discussed in my site. Talk to the lodge owner for local tours.

Raj (darjeeling-tourism.com) May 2017

Glad to see your consistency in replying for all the posts. Keep it up.

5 adults travelling to Sikkim for 4 days and 5 nights starting 16 June 2017.Our plan is to visit Lachen, Lachung, Nathula Pass. We'd be flying from Bangalore, landing in Bagdogra at 5pm.

Option A:
Day 1 -3 : Traveling to Gangtok on the same day. Next morning we'd take 3D/2N plan for Lachen and Lachung.

Option B:
If travel is not possible on same day from Airport.
Day 1 : We'd stay in Siliguri for the night and next day we travel to Gangtok.
Day 2-3 : From there we'd take 2D/1N plan for Lachung/Lachen.
Day 4 : From Gangtok to Nathula pass, Tsomgo lake. Staying in Siliguri.
Day 5 - 10:30 am flight.

Questions:
1. Is our plan hectic?
2. Is travelling to Lachen/Lachung possible in Mid June?
3. We are planning to book the packages for Lachung/Lachen after reaching Gangtok. Is it ok?

Thanks a lot for your work and support. You are very good at what you are doing.

Regards
Sathish (May 2017)

Hi, you can not cover both Lachen and Lachung with 2D/1N plan, you need an extra day. With your schedule, you can not do the tour unless you book it in advance and get your permits ready before you go.

Total Members: 4 (two couple)

20 July:  11:00 AM NJP to Gangtok via taxi (Will book from NJP), Check in at Hotel Deorali (Booked from OYO rooms for Rs. 4594 for three nights), MG Road.

21 July: 10 point sightseeing tour.

Kumar Gaurav (July 2017)

Nothing much to add to your itinerary. Couple of points to note...

1) Try to get a Sikkim registered vehicle from NJP (i.e. with Sikkim number plate). Because of current political situation, the protesters are at times blocking a part of Sevoke road on the plains which falls on the way to Sikkim. Sikkim registered vehicles are usually not disturbed.

2) Due to rains, you may like to check road conditions locally before proceeding to Tsomgo and Nathula.

Hi Raj,

You have built a wonderful source of information and insight. Inspired I have planned my trip to Darjeeling and Sikkim in end of September and hope the current unrest is resolved by then.

After breakfast transfer to Siliguri visiting Kalimpong on way-Flower Nursery, Delo Hills, Pine View Nursery, Jang-Dong-Palrifro-Brang Gompa. Drive to Loleygaon for a canopy walk amongst tree on tree-top hanging bridge.Visit Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, Sukna, briefly halt at Coronation Bridge

Hi, only Kalimpong visit is practical on your way back. Sukna, Mahananda WLS etc are not on Gangtok Siliguri route.

Your plan is little out of the line. On day2 transfer to Namchi and then to Darjeeling. On your last day, not sure what is your flight timing... Kalimpong sightseeing can otherwise be quite tight. For your plans, you ideally need a dedicated vehicle for the whole trip... but talk to the operator... outside vehicles are not allowed for local sightseeing in many places in Sikkim and same is the case in Darjeeling.
